About Dehradun

Dehradun - The capital city of Uttarakhand encompasses a good blend of a modern city thriving with hill culture. It is set in the Himalayan foot hills at the centre of the 120 kms long Doon Valley. The name Dehradun is literally made up of two words where Dera means Camp and Dun stands for Valley. This beautiful town is referred as the gateway to Mussoorie and Garhwal interior. It is perhaps one of the oldest cities in India and was occupied, in turn by the Sikhs, Mughals and Gurkhas before coming under the reigns of the British. Elite educational and many other institutions were established during the British period. A famous tourist attraction, Mussoorie (Queen of the Hills) is just 25 km from Dehradun. Haridwar and Rishikesh are other nearby tourist stations of great spiritual and religious significance. Dehradun has also been a hub of educations, and many well-known schools and institutions are located here. Climate of Dehradun in the month of December is chilling cold (woolen clothes are advisable), with maximum and minimum temperatures of 25 °C and 7 °C, respectively with good sunshine.

1st International Conference on Mathematical Techniques in Engineering Applications (ICMTEA2013), October 24-25, 2013, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India


The 1st International Conference on Mathematical Techniques in Engineering Applications (ICMTEA2013) was successfully held in Graphic Era (Deemed to be University), Dehradun on 24-25 October, 2013. The meeting was chaired by Chief Guest, Harsh Sanghavi former Deputy Director, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. In the inaugural address dignitaries welcomed all the invited speakers and participants and expressed their great happiness on the occasion of event. There were six technical sessions with four sessions for invited speaker and two sessions (having two parallel sessions each) for paper presentation.


The conference had 16 invited speakers from different parts of India and abroad. The speakers included eminent personalities in pure and applied mathematics such as David D. Hanagal (Fellow of Royal Statistical Society, London, UK University of Pune), Prasun Das (ISI, Kolkata), Madhu Jain (IIT Roorkee), Arpan Gupta (PhD NUS, Singapore), Raghavendra Gupta (Singapore) etc. The invited speakers gave in-depth understanding of their field of expertise. There were discussions on performance modeling for queuing system with unreliable servers, hypergeometric functions, design of controllers using fuzzy neural networks, stability of iterations in numerical praxis etc. The discussion also covered topics such as reliability of computer systems. There were also interesting talks on biomedical applications such as study of lungs and surfactants, controlling HIV using model based therapeutic approach, comparison of frailty models for kidney infection data under Weibull baseline distribution, etc. The speakers also discussed about numerical techniques to solve complex reliability problems. The mathematical concepts were also extended to study flow of bubbles.


There were 62 papers presented in the conference. The papers presented in the conference were from distinguished universities such as IIT Roorkee, IIT Mumbai, IIT Mandi, NITs, ISI Banglore, Jadavepur University, GB Pant Univ. Pantnagar, Lucknow University, Kurushtra University, Sri Venkateswara University, Nagarjuna University, etc. There were two parallel sessions headed by two or three expert reviewers who chaired each session. The sessions were categorized in the following areas: -

  • reliability and operation research
  • fuzzy logic and neural networks
  • biomathematics
  • fluid dynamics
  • differential equation, finite element method and numerical analysis
  • astrophysics, astronomy and applied mathematics problems

There were very interesting talks and presentations such as mathematical modeling of production of biodiesel, cloud computing, profitability study scans of Indian banks, combined effect of heat and mass transfer with thermal radiation, finite element analysis of conveyor roller chain etc. There were mathematical application to biological systems such as finite element analysis to study vibration in cortical bone and femur bone. There were many studies related to reliability engineering such as analysis of reliability models with degradation, fuzzy analysis of machine repair problem with switching failure and reboot, stochastic modeling of multi-state complex system, etc.


The conference presentation was well organized and there was an active participation from the participants in the question and answer session. The participants and speakers were also provided with proper lodging and catering facility.


The conference received around 180 papers out of which, 110 papers were accepted. Out of these, 62 papers were presented in the conference. The conference received research papers from five countries - India, Singapore, Nigeria, Philippine and France.


The conference was concluded by Valedictory function by Director Research, Graphic Era (Deemed to be University), Prof. Ankush Mittal. The conference meeting was successful for young researchers to share new ideas, to learn from experts, to get useful feedback on their research work and hopefully some collaboration to do further research. It also gave a very broad understanding of Mathematics and its application in various disciplines such as computer science, reliability engineering, finite element analysis, vibration, fluid mechanics, cloud computing, bio-medical application, neural network, fuzzy logic, etc. It also gave participants to have an international exposure and to work with faculty and students from IIT’s.

The 2nd International Conference on Mathematical Techniques in Engineering Applications (ICMTEA2016) was successfully held in the Graphic Era (Deemed to be University), Dehradun on 29-30 April, 2016. The Convener of the conference, Dr. Mangey Ram addressed the gathering highlighting the scope and aims of the conference and expressed great happiness on the occasion of the event. The invited speakers and participants were welcomed by the department. There were nine technical sessions with six sessions for invited speaker and two sessions (having two parallel sessions each) for paper presentation.


The conference had 11 invited speakers from the expert of advances in mathematics and engineering areas. The speakers included eminent personalities in pure and applied mathematics. The discussions also included the role of regression-based approach in software reliability engineering, cascading failure models and system reliability, risk-informed modeling and decisions for complex engineering systems. There were interesting talks on ecology to energy through mathematical models: sustainable biodiesel production, soft computing approaches in technical diagnostics. The speakers also discussed the optimal joint harvest of a prawn fishery and a poultry of birds in a linked bioeconomic system, designing near-optimal irregular experimental plans satisfying multi-optimality criteria etc. There was a talk about a major breakthrough in the dynamics of the logistic map.
